The agent doesn't know the difference between "lightning" and "lightening". The agent emphasizes with all uppercase and writes in teen-speak with "kinda" and "sorta". It's the agent who should be given a pass.

Spare "e" or not, I found the post really insightful and honest. As an aspiring writer, I would hope to find an agent committed to me - to the potential he sees not simply the marketability of my first manuscript. If lightning doesn't strike, it's probably not the right fit for either.

You know, I don't really care if the agent uses a few grammatically incorrect words. I use them all the time (Not in my stories, of course) and it's very common of people nowadays, so get used to it. Don't judge somebody by the way they type.

It's great to get some info about agent's thought process as they deal with submissions!

I've always thought of agents as pseudo-mythical beings as I've queried my MS around, this helped to make me realize there is an actual human at the other end thinking about my book idea.

Crazy!

Thanks so much for sharing your insight and experience. :)

Would you consider respresenting an unpublished Star Wars novel?

You answered the second question by saying you rely heavily on your instincts. How many pages does it generally take you to establish your gut feeling? In other words, how long does the author have to capture your attention?
